How to select the right LED video wall
Selecting the right LED video wall for any project, including control rooms or corporate/marketing display applications, is extremely important and many factors need to be considered.
At Ultimate Visual Solutions (UVS) we can help you navigate through these factors, so that you achieve the correct solution for your needs.
Initially, the project budget is always a significant consideration, especially for LED video walls, as they require a higher upfront investment than other large format display technologies.
But in return for that additional investment you get completely seamless displays with no borders of any kind between the LED panels and the operational life of the LED technology is double that of LCD equivalents.
It is also possible to make some compromises on overall LED video wall specifications, that when coupled with the UVS Lucidity video wall controller technology, still provide a high quality and flexible display.
Factors for your LED video wall
Things to consider when selecting an LED video wall include:
- What overall size of LED video wall does your space ideally need?
- What types of data sources need to be displayed?
- What is the native resolution of all these different data sources?
- How many of these data sources need to be displayed simultaneously on the LED video wall?
- What will be the viewing distances to the LED video wall?
- What is the ambient lighting in the location of the LED video wall?
- How can the LED video wall be mounted in the required location – directly to a suitable wall or will a free-standing support structure be required, with accompanying decorative surround?
- How does the LED video wall content need to be managed in terms of changing the layouts, by how many people and how frequently? This is where the UVS Lucidity video wall controller technology offers significant benefits for controlling the LED video wall.
- What additional air conditioning/ventilation will need to be considered for the new LED video wall installation?
- What UK/European technical support is available from the manufacturer? UVS works with a number of high quality LED video wall manufacturing partners, who are selected not only for their quality and range of products, but for the level of local support they can offer to UVS and the end client.
Compiling the answers to the above questions will allow UVS to discuss with you the optimum configuration of LED video wall to suit your project.
Video Wall Project Requirements
As an example, if a project requirement is to simultaneously display two separate sources, with each having a native resolution of 4K, it would not be ideal to select an LED video wall with an overall physical size that fits your requirements, but which only has an overall 2x HD resolution.
Although any input source to the Lucidity video wall controller can be downscaled to display at a lower resolution, depending on the content, the resulting display could look poor, with some data being unreadable.
However, if there are multiple HD resolution sources for display simultaneously, these can display perfectly well at a reduced resolution.
This, and many other aspects of LED installation, can be demonstrated on our LED video wall at UVS demonstration rooms across the UK, through either an in-person visit or a remote online demonstration.
As another example of the bespoke nature of LED installation, the optimum viewing distance from the LED video wall is a factor when considering the pixel pitch of the LED video wall modules.
In general, the lower the pixel pitch, the higher the resolution for any given LED video wall size and the closer the optimum viewing distance is. This is why lower pixel pitches e.g. 0.9mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm are generally used in control room applications where operators will be viewing closer to the LED video wall.
