West Midlands Metro Chooses UVS for Control Room Expansion to Support Growth

We have successfully completed a control room expansion project for West Midlands Metro, supporting the operator’s future growth and network expansion plans.

West Midlands Metro’s control room uses a network of CCTV cameras to help operate and manage the light rail network serving Birmingham and Wolverhampton, which carries around nine million passengers each year.

Having originally installed the control room system in 2023, we have now enhanced the facility to prepare for a major expansion programme that will transform the Metro from a single tram line into a network three times its current size.

The expansion project will see the Metro serve more than 80 tram stops, connect 20 transport interchanges, and link Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Dudley, Brierley Hill, Digbeth, North Solihull, Birmingham Airport, the NEC and HS2.

We delivered the new control room in partnership with systems integrator TIS (Total Integrated Solutions), a specialist in digital transformation and integration across the life safety, security and communications sectors.

The upgraded control room features a video wall comprising a 10×2 array of 49-inch displays, powered by our Lucidity WBC controller, providing the scalability and flexibility needed to support West Midlands Metro’s future expansion plans.
